Africa's Living Arts Textiles: Silent Oratory reveals the non-verbal communication of messages, including praise and insults, political allegiance, social affiliations, condolence, philosophy, current events and history through a visual panoply of hand-woven, hand-stamped, earth-dyed, batik, tie-dye and factory printed African textiles.
The Akan, the Yoruba, and various African nationals, make extensive use of pictographic symbols. Individually, each indigenous symbol is associated with a specific proverb or saying rooted in their experience. Collectively, these symbols form a system of writing that preserves and transmits the accumulated cultural values of the people. This pictographic writing system is used extensively in textiles, examples of which form the basis of this magnificent exhibition Africa's Living Arts Textiles: Silent Oratory.
The exhibition includes indigenous African cloths such as the hand-stamped Adinkra cloth, hand-woven Kente cloth, earth-yed Bogolanfini cloth, Kuba woven raffia cloth, hand-woven Aso Oke, and other country cloths. The symbols encoded in these cloths are linked to proverbs, stories, songs, beliefs and everyday expressions, including insult! Accompanying paraphernalia and video footage round out the exhibition Africa's Living Arts Textiles: Silent Oratory.
